Muzei Live Wallpaper

A living museum for your Android home screen.

Muzei is a live wallpaper that gently refreshes your home screen each day with famous works of art. It also recedes into the background, blurring and dimming artwork to keep your icons and widgets in the spotlight. Simply double touch the wallpaper or open the Muzei app to enjoy and explore the artwork in its full glory.

Alternatively, you can choose your favorite photos from your own gallery or other apps to use on your home screen. To keep your wallpaper fresh, Muzei will rotate through your favorite photos every few hours.

    First, I have to say that the issue may come from my implementation. I'm getting a lot of crash with this stacktrace:

    I first thought I call too often setUserCommands method, but I realised that I also had this crash in a version in which I never called it.

    Does some other extension developers get this crash? Did you manage to fix it on your side or does it need a fix in the API?

    With the stock launcher on a Nexus 5 and only one pane only the far left of the image is visible.

    Because the image is likely to be centred on the focal point. It would be nice if the image was centred in the launcher.

    On my 6P with the Android N preview Muzei can't see to change backgrounds correctly. It works a few times, then stops updating. When I open the app it shows me the activate button like it isn't set as the background any more.

    Marshmallow/Doze preventing wallpaper rotation

    I've noticed Doze stops wallpaper rotation, completely. Android developer documentation says "Standard AlarmManager alarms are deferred to the next maintenance window" but this doesn't seem to be the case - the alarms are ignored and never run. I've noticed this with my plugin, which I've set to instruct Muzei to change wallpaper every 3 hours - it will be days before it changes, and only then because my phone happened to be awake when the alarm was scheduled to fire. It would make sense to update Muzei so API 21+ devices use JobScheduler, and let older devices continue to use AlarmManager.set().

    Add option to disable blur while screen is locked

    I was perusing the reviews on the Play Store when I noticed someone mentioning they'd like the ability to see the artwork in its full, unblurred glory while the keyguard is up and blurring once more when the screen is unlocked. Seemed simple enough so I whipped this up.

    High CPU usage on Nexus 9

    Muzei is utilizing a much higher CPU than expected on the Nexus 9. This also seems to be causing unusual heating of the device near the CPU.

  • Black box on screen rotations

    Black box on screen rotations

    I sometimes find a black section appear briefly in the lower portion of my phones wallpaper, during screen rotations.

    This frequently happens after turning the screen back on, and also happens after exiting some apps.

    After about a second it fixes itself.

    The easiest way to reproduce this I found was as follows:

    1. Hold the phone landscape
    2. Open the camera app (screen then rotates to landscape)
    3. Press the home button (another rotation back to portrait, with a black section in the wallpaper briefly appearing)

    It's only a minor thing, but not ideal. I'd like to track down the cause of the delay if possible.

    Muzei always downloads wallpapers with any Internet connection - even if this is a non-flatrate, non-stable vor slow connection... If this would be restricted to WLAN , this would be fine :-)

    Steps to reproduce

    Open the main Activity to see the wallpaper in full Lock the screen Unlock again The wallpaper gets blurred and stuck in that state.

    After this it cannot be scrolled and double click does not work to unblur it.

    Hi, thanks for this nice app!

    Since at least version 3.2.0 the section "About this photo" does not show up.

    Now I have version 3.3.0 installed an the problem persists.

    Relevant log line is the following:

    I'm using muzei happily for over a year now. But since a few weeks, I don't receive new artworks anymore.

    Maybe the last update of muzei (I did it 4 weeks ago) broke it? At least I'm not aware of any other related changes/updates...

    The current behavior is that it adds all images from selected folders into the queue. I wish there was an option to treat them as separate sources and choose between displaying pics of one folder at a time.

    Add Material You Theming

    It would be nice if when Muzei was set as your wallpaper, the theming of Muzei would be pulled from the wallpaper colors ala Material You rather than always using a blue color (like it does now).

    There's some challenges here (as by default you can't change the color pulled from a theme without reloading the entire activity...which is extremely disruptive in Muzei's case given that the Next Artwork button in the app changes the wallpaper). This may mean that more dynamic theming only possible with Jetpack Compose may be a prerequisite for doing this work.

    Dear team,

    I noticed by checking your default image source on wikiart, that I missed several great paintings.

    So I would love to load that missed ones by clicking in them, maybe from a "images of the current month"-gallery.

    Or maybe a "restart display of current month's paintings" function.

    Is it possible to implement these features?

    Optionally allow auto-advancing offline

    Currently, Muzei is only able to auto-advance when online, but it is also capable of advancing offline using the "skip" button. I think this option could be added in the menu:

    muzei

    When offline, just like when using the "skip" button, Muzei would show preloaded images if any are available, then fall back to random selection.

    Ideally the "last downloaded" timestamp should not be updated, so Muzei can fetch fresh images as soon as the device comes online, even if it shouldn't change the image yet.

    Along with this, I think it would be good to preload a few more images than currently, especially for the people who using that option: it would allow to get fresh images even if the device is offline for a small amount of time.

    Download current image

    Some resources support downloading the current image to a selected directory. There is a separate application that calls Explorer to select where to save the current image (regardless of source). I would like to be able to download current wallpapers natively, without using hacks.
